Attic Insulation

Attic insulation - Win the fight against rising energy costs with high-impact insulation

Attic Insulation in Cleveland, Ohio - Do you have enough?

The sad truth is that you pay more when you have less insulation!

It is estimated that around NINETY percent of homes are under-insulated across America.  While this number may not be exact anymore (The study, by the Boston University School of Public Health, is a few years old at this point, it was done in 2000), it is staggering that so many are suffering hot summers and cold winters indoors when it can be completely avoided.

The study also said "increased insulation would slash residential natural gas consumption (9 percent), reduce propane use (10 percent) and fuel oil consumption (12 percent)."  That means that most homeowners are spending more money, for the extra energy that they lose, because of a lack of insulation.

Where is most of the heat loss happening?  If you said the attic, you're correct.  It all has to do with heat rising, right up from the house into the attic, where it is vented outside and lost forever.  To prevent this, attic insulation adds a barrier on top of the ceiling of the top floor.  Think of it as the lid to the thermal envelope - the sealed area inside of the home separating the inside air from the outside air.

With a thick insulation barrier on the floor of the attic, or the walls of a finished attic, treated warm or cool air stays inside the spaces where it is sent by the HVAC (Sealed Thermal Envelope).  Additionally, venting is added to the attic to allow the home to breathe out vapors, because moisture trapped inside leads to mold growth, wood rot, and health problems.

Attic Insulation is the most easy place to increase insulation and energy efficiency, leading to more comfort and savings.  Give Cleveland Home Insulation a call today for a free attic inspection and quote (216) 264-0848

What types of insulation do we use to insulate Cleveland attics?

We offer loose fill cellulose insulation or loose fill fiberglass insulation for use in unfinished attic spaces, a common building design for homes in Cleveland.  The insulation is spread thickly over every section of the attic floor, measuring sticks are placed in several spots around the attic to make sure that coverage is even, and the proper amount of insulation is added.  Attic joists will be completely covered with insulation, you can do a visual inspection in your attic to see if the joists are completely hidden, slightly hidden, or visible.  It might be time to call Cleveland Home Insulation for your free inspection and quote!

If the attic is finished, we can densely pack cellulose insulation into the walls, and if the attic is in the process of being finished, we can use fiberglass batts inside of the walls.  No matter what the conditions of your attic, Cleveland Home Insulation has a solution for you!

We also densely pack the eaves of the attic, which are the sections that overhang the side of the home, with loose fill cellulose insulation or fiberglass.  A vent is then added to the eaves, either on top through the shingles and/or below the overhang, to control moisture.  This is to allow the unconditioned attic to breathe out any vapors instead of allowing them to absorb into the insulation.  Venting is considered a part of home weatherization and is required for certain types of rebate programs.  A conditioned attic has no need for ventilation because it is a sealed space and taken care of by the HVAC.

How does attic insulation increase energy efficiency?

Insulation acts like a thermal seal, trapping and separating warm air from cold air.  It does this by restricting and separating air flowing in from the outdoors.  When insulating we create what is called a 'Thermal Envelope'.  This process means to insulate and weatherize on all sides, around, above, and below, so that the living space is completely insulated from all around.

The attic insulation is the top seal of the thermal envelope, and one of the most important, because heat rises.  The wood and shingles that make up our attic's do not perform well when stopping heat transfer, you can see this on some homes during the winter after snow sticks to the ground.  Under-insulated attics in homes will have big melted snow spots on their roofs, you can see it just driving by.  So much heat (in other words, energy you're paying for) is escaping that its melting snow on your roof.

Properly insulated attics will contain the heat generated by your furnace, keeping it inside the home, and inside of the thermal envelope, in the lived-in parts of the home, right where we want it to be.  Keeping more of your heat means the furnace will need to run for less time, on a lower setting, saving energy and high energy payments.
